At the February meeting of the Sault Ste. Marie Police Services Board, they voted in support of the changes to the taxi by law to include accessible taxis.
MOTION: The Board approved the amendments to the Taxi Bylaw with respect to wheelchair accessible taxis as outlined in our recommendations:
RECOMMENDATION: 3 accessible taxis in the city of SSM by the summer of 2015 operating on a 24/7 schedule.
The next step in this process will be when this issue goes before Council for a vote. The tentative date for this meeting is April 13th. We encourage you to send a follow up letter to your City Councilor. This is extremely important to our success.
At that time, we need to send a strong and clear message to our Council that the citizens of Sault Ste. Marie want accessible taxi service, and that it must be approved by Council in order to meet the intent of the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA 2005), Integrated Accessibility Standards Regulations (IASR), Part 73, which states, "Every Municipality shall identify progress made toward meeting the need for on-demand accessible taxi cabs including any steps that will be taken to meet the need in it's accessibility plan."
Thank you for taking responsibility to improve service for all citizens of Sault Ste. Marie.
